The much-publicized “trimdown” from it’s original length supposedly has helped the film in the eyes of those who saw it in it’s “long” form, but for me it leaves the film a series of overly short would-be vignettes. I love how determinedly the resident-asshole character begs for his own demise. I love that the “what next?” moment involves the arrival of a giant-sized Python. The slapstick is funny enough, Allen remains a natural talent for such fare, and the animal gags are uniformly amusing. And the film gets just the right amount of mileage out of it’s built-in “awww”-factor: Allen, transformed into a dog… You need “GEEK Speak,” where each column will cover a currently newsworthy aspect of Geek Culture and lay it out in plain english for YOUR benefit.

With this film, Spike Lee finally steps outside himself and the result is arguably the first of his efforts since “Malcom X” not to buckle under the added weight of it’s maker’s obsession with identity politics. Let me just say that the film features one “trap” which tested my resolve to not flee the theater upon it’s unveiling alone. Genre fans dutifully lined up and braced for the predictable dissapointment, only to find that “Underworld” was an out-of-left-field surprise; a solid, inventive and (most importantly) intelligent and serious offering that quickly jumped to… Being spoofed is one thing, being spoofed multiple years before you even exist has just got to be irritating when you’re fishing for Oscars. “Paycheck?” Let’s get real here: Wearing Daredevil’s horns didn’t kill this man’s career, wearing Jennifer Lopez’s leash did. Seriously, though, Bill Pullman got screwed in that movie. The cast (smaller than last time, as well) is in no way afforded the kind of lengthy buildup they were in Allen’s ouvre: Our Heroes are sketched out as broad, simple cliche’s of the genre, and for the most part they behave accordingly.
